Bottom-Up vs Surface Aeration
Fountains look great, but they mostly aerate the surface. Here’s why diffused bottom-up aeration does more for water quality.

Not all aeration is equal. The difference between surface aeration and bottom-up diffused aeration comes down to how much of the water you actually oxygenate.
Surface aeration
Fountains and surface units churn the top of the pond. They add oxygen where the water is already best oxygenated, but do little for the deeper, oxygen-poor layers where muck accumulates.
Bottom-up aeration
A bottom diffuser releases fine bubbles that rise through the entire water column, circulating and oxygenating from the floor up. That reaches the bottom, where decomposition happens and where low oxygen causes the biggest problems.
