For koi and ornamental ponds
Aeration for koi and ornamental ponds
Koi and ornamental ponds live or die on dissolved oxygen. Gentle, diffused aeration keeps oxygen up through summer heat and dawn lows, protects the biofilter that keeps water clear, and holds an open hole in winter ice so gases can escape. It is water-quality hardware, not an algaecide.

Recommended
A right-sized electric aeration setup
Most koi and ornamental ponds sit near the house with power available, so an electric diffused aeration system is the straightforward fit. See the electric aeration collection for the pump, airline and diffuser to match your pond. Not sure on sizing? Request a recommendation and we will spec it for your water. The challenge
The koi pond problem
Ornamental ponds are small, warm and heavily stocked, so oxygen swings hard. When it drops, fish stress first and the pond turns fast.

Dawn oxygen crashes
Plants and algae make oxygen in daylight but consume it overnight, so dissolved oxygen bottoms out near dawn. That is when stressed koi gasp at the surface.

Summer heat holds less oxygen
Warm water simply cannot hold as much dissolved oxygen as cool water, so a hot, crowded koi pond runs short exactly when the fish need it most.

A stalled biofilter and murky water
The beneficial bacteria that clear fish waste need oxygen to work. Starve them of it and the filter stalls, ammonia builds and the water goes cloudy or green.

Winter under the ice
When ice seals the surface, trapped gases build up and oxygen falls. A sealed ornamental pond can lose its fish over winter without an opening in the ice.
The approach
How aeration fixes it
A small diffused aeration system pushes air from the bottom up, adding oxygen and gentle circulation without blasting a delicate ornamental pond.

Steady dissolved oxygen
Continuous bottom aeration keeps oxygen up around the clock, which takes the edge off the dawn low and the summer-heat squeeze that stress koi.

A healthier biofilter
Oxygenated, circulating water keeps the beneficial bacteria working, so fish waste is processed and the water stays clearer, the natural way rather than with chemicals.

Gentle, diffused flow
Fine-bubble diffused aeration adds oxygen with a soft rolling boil rather than a harsh current, so it suits koi and ornamental fish and does not tear up plantings.

Open water in winter
Run the diffuser through freeze-up, or add an accessory, to help hold an opening in the ice so trapped gases can escape and oxygen keeps coming in.
Windmill, solar and electric aeration
Oxygen for every pond, on or off the grid
Koenders got its start in 1988 building wind-powered aeration for farm dugouts. Today that same rugged, low-operating-cost engineering carries across our full lineup of windmill, solar and electric systems, each matched to your pond size and power source, so water stays healthy on farms, acreages and remote sites across the continent.
