A homestead pond usually sits well away from the grid. When the water sits still, it stratifies into warm surface water over a cold, oxygen-starved bottom, and that is where the trouble starts.
No power at the water
Most homestead and off-grid ponds sit far from a power line, so plug-in aeration is impractical and trenching a line out to the water is costly.
Green water and algae
Warm, still surface water feeds algae and floating scum that make the pond look and smell neglected through the summer.
Black water and rotten-egg smell
With no oxygen at the bottom the water turns anaerobic, releases hydrogen sulphide gas and starts to smell like rotten eggs.
