What Size Aerator for a 1-Acre Pond? Sizing by Acre & Depth

How to size a pond aerator by surface acreage and depth, with a simple reference table and the common mistakes to avoid.

Last updated July 27, 2026

For a pond up to about 1 acre and 25 ft deep, a single diaphragm windmill (or a comparable solar or electric aerator) is a sound starting point. Beyond 1 acre, you step up to a double diaphragm windmill or a higher-flow electric unit. The exact answer comes from three inputs: your surface area in acres, your depth, and whether you have power.

How to find your acreage

Multiply the pond's length by its width in feet, then divide by 43,560 to get surface acres. Our pond aerator calculator does this and returns a recommendation automatically.

Why depth and shape matter

Deeper ponds hold more water per acre, and long or irregular ponds may need an extra diffuser to reach every corner. When a pond sits on the edge between two sizes, size up rather than down.

The mistake to avoid

The most common error is going too small. An undersized aerator will not circulate the whole pond, so algae, muck and low-oxygen problems persist. That is why our sizing is deliberately conservative, and why it is worth confirming your choice with us before you buy.

FAQ

Common questions

What size aerator do I need for a 1-acre pond?
For a pond up to about 1 acre and 25 ft deep, a single diaphragm windmill, or a comparable solar or high-flow electric aerator, is a sound starting point. Confirm against your depth and shape, and size up if your pond is close to 1 acre or unusually deep.
How do I calculate my pond size in acres?
Multiply length by width in feet and divide by 43,560. For example, a 200 ft by 150 ft pond is 30,000 sq ft, or about 0.69 acres. Our calculator does the math and recommends a system.
Is it better to oversize or undersize a pond aerator?
Oversize, within reason. An aerator that is slightly larger than needed simply circulates the pond more thoroughly, while an undersized one leaves dead zones where problems persist. When a pond falls between two sizes, choose the larger.
